Episode Four: Cherry Chapstick to Jazz Fantastic!

Wow. It's been a while since my last post. School has been getting really hectic, but it's good hectic. Instead of worrying about readings and tests, I'm worrying about writing scripts and scouting locations for my next film (which will probably be a visual essay on Hollywood set to Sutton Foster's "I Want To Go To Hollywood" from Grand Hotel. So psyched!). While some classes like my sound class and tv class have readings, they're not bad at all and are so interesting! My first assignment for my television class is a flow outline where I look at the flow of programming on one channel between the last 10 minutes of one show and the first 10 minutes of another. It's a really cool assignment and school is a blast right now!

Life has been pretty good. It's really funny to see how deep friendships can grow in college. While I really don't have a set group of friends, I instead have amazing friends from different walks of life. It feels so different from high school with having that set group of people, but being so close with so many different people is forcing me to look at myself and the world in a new light, as cliche as that sounds...anyway...

Last night was SO amazing! I got tickets for Lauren and I to go see Katy Perry and the Alphabeats (a Danish pop group she got me hooked on) a while ago and the night finally arrived! Anyways, I didn't realize tickets went on sale until a few days after they were already on sale so we got tickets 4 rows from the last row in the balcony. Oh well hahaha. Then, once we got there, we didn't see anything about the Alphabeats and found out that they backed out of the tour at the last minute and were replaced by this ho-hum band called The Daylights. They were okay, they just sounded like every other angst ridden rock band out there. Then, Katy Perry came on and it was awesome!!! While the dance floor would have been fun, it was good to have seats so we could sit down when she sang her slow songs. This creepy gay black guy kept trying to dance with Lauren and I and it was just awkward enough to be amusing without being sketchy, if you get that lol. At least he was having fun as some of the other people there looked like they were serving time sitting there. Katy Perry was A BLAST live and she had so much energy. She also didn't have enough songs since she's only had one album, so she sang Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" and...the Hokey Pokey...all in all, such a great time.

Afterwards, Lauren and I found this jazz club in Bel-Air in this Dating Zagat book she got me for Christmas so we could find really nice and eclectic restaurants and this one was amazing!!! The concert let out at 10:30 and the restuarant was about a half-hour away...but the kitchen closed at 10:50 so we had to put our order in over the phone. Our reservation was at 10, but they were so gracious and helped us out. We arrived at 11:05 and they sat us right near the stage and this huge fireplace and our food came out in 5 minutes! This place was amazing as it was like walking into a 1950's NYC nightclub...the place was a deal considering we also had live music throughout the night with a jazz band and Barbara Morrison singing...she's a jazz legend with 30+ years experience and has performed with Ray Charles, Ella, and all the greats...she was amazing and talked to us during dinner. Lauren went up to her to buy a cd from her and had the following convo;

Lo: Thanks so much, you're amazing, yada yada yada....
BM: Thanks sugar. Do you want to get another CD for your husband?
Lo: (glances over at me) What?
BM: Your husband!
Lo: Oh...no..he's my best friend.
BM: (winking) It always starts that way, sweetie.
Lo: I'm 19...
BM: WHAT?!?! (did a double take since Lauren looks 25)

Hysterical. Anyways, she was AMAZING and sang tons of awesome songs while we ate mac and cheese with a bacon brioche crust and a kobe beef burger with gruyere cheese, pulled short rib, and caramelized onions on top...SO GOOD. I also had a caeser salad to start and we split this flourless chocolate cake with mint ice cream...it was SOOOO GOOD!!!

The night was amazing and so bizarre as we were in nosebleed seats with Katy Perry and then got to sit rows away from a jazz legend. The ride home was also fantastic as we took Mulholland Drive and saw all of LA below us...it was so perfect. I love LA, USC, and my friends here.

Episode Three: Delicate

Classes have finally started to get really interesting and I've gotten into the thick of my year and I know what to expect for the rest of the year, not counting any plot twists or game changers along the way. I've started to get into this rhythm and I'm really enjoying it. The biggest thing that happened was me making my very first student film! The project had to be two minutes or less and had to be edited in camera (meaning every time I stopped recording, that would be a take). The editing in camera was challenging, especially when things didn't work out and I had to cue the tape back. Anyway, my project was titled "Delicate" and most of all dealt with a girl's loss with her boyfriend and her desperation to go back to the way things were. The beginning of the film dealt with the girl's consiousness placed in this labyrinth of tunnels as she kept chasing after and trying to cling to her boyfriend who was disappearing and always floating away from her. The last few moments of the film showed the girlfriend and how she was dealing with the loss without going into her mind as she just let all of emotional barriers go and just wailed. Working with an actress was so rewarding to get her to that place (even though she was Lauren lol) and made me remember why film is so important in the first place; because of the emotions it can eternally capture. I got chills while filming as we really pushed Lauren to really feel this terrible pain and I loved going on this emotional journey. It just felt so real.

I also had a lot of fun with Trojan Vision's open house and got almost 90 new recruits for the station! I'm very excited for the nightly broadcast to start airing as I can't wait to start booking guests again and producing talk show episodes. I already have about 6 or 7 guests interested in appearing with two confirmed ones; Jonathan Bennett (Lindsey Lohan's bf in "Mean Girls") and Kenny Baumann from "Secret Life of an American Teenager"!!! It's going to be awesome when our first week of broadcast starts on February 2nd.

Also, I really wanted to express my excitement for the most amazing televised event this week...THE RETURN OF LOST!!! I am beyond ecstatic to find out where or when the island went to when Ben moved it, if Juliet will emere as a leader with the rest of the characters off the island, Sun's path to vengeance, and to see how the Oceanic 6 go back to the island (if Ben and ocke are telling the truth that they HAVE to go back)...answers are going to be revealed and I can't wait to see how everything goes full circle. I have put so much into watching LOST and I have no idea what I'm going to do when the series finally ends. I feel for these characters so much. This show was the reason why I wanted to enter the world of television in the first place and an inspiration to what I can achieve through this medium.

In the words of Jack Shepard...

WE HAVE TO GO BACK, KATE! WE HAVE TO GO BACK!!!

Episode Two: Electricity

Wow. I have no idea what to say about this week except it has been a whirlwind and I've been stressed out of my mind, but for the first time I'm loving every minute of it. I'm finally taking the classes that I've been wanting to take since I've been at USC...actual film production classes!!!

The rest of Sunday went really well. After the Comic Convention, I went to the gym with Melissa and we ate her mom's lasagna (SO GOOD!) and watched the Golden Globes. I peaced out a little early to see Lisa. I haven't seen her in forever and it was amazing to reunite with two of my best friends in the same day. We watched the new "Desperate Housewives", but not before Lisa introduced me to YOGURTLAND! It's just like Pinkberry except it's self-serve, they have tons of different flavors, unlimited fresh fruit and toppings, and they just charge you 30 cents an ounce...pretty good deal!

This week has been soo stressful between starting classes and setting up Trojan Vision's booth at the Involvement Fair and our Open House (coming up tomorrow and Friday). All of my classes are just so inspiring. In my sound class, we got to see the original first reel of film from Star Wars and heard the sound from the set to show just how much work went into the sound of that film. That was a once in a lifetime opportunity since it's the only print in the world and just shown in that class, so it was pretty amazing :)

Other than Fundamentals of Cinematic Sound, I'm also taking Fundamentals of Cinematic Technique (essentially the same, but focusing on cinematography/the image on the screen), Cinematic Communication ( I make 5 films using professional digital cameras and edit on Avid...so psyched!!!), Writing the Short Script (screenwriting taught by the writer of Raging Bull!!!), and Intro to TV (I just watch TV). All of this just gives me an overwhelming sense of awe and inspiration and I can't wait to just hit the ground running. This passion inside of me is just taking over and I'm going to do this. I'm going to give it my all and just go for it. Let the semester really begin...I'm ready.

"Electricity" - Billy Elliot: The Musical

"I can't really explain it,
I haven't got the words
It's a feeling that you can't control
I suppose it's like forgetting, losing who you are
And at the same time something makes you whole
It's like that there's a music playing in your ear
And I'm listening, and I'm listening and then I disappear

And then I feel a change
Like a fire deep inside
Something bursting me wide open impossible to hide
And suddenly I'm flying, flying like a bird
Like electricity, electricity
Sparks inside of me
And I'm free...I'm free"

Episode One: What It Means To Be A Friend

And the third season of my life as a tv show begins!!! While the conflicts and themes of this season aren't entirely clear, this premiere episode reintroduced the audience to the world of the show and was pretty much a typical episode; a whole weekend of zany adventures!!!

So, with my great luck, I left JFK and was about to leave...but then was stuck on the runway for a half-hour because we lost power in the first-class galley and therefore could not fly. I was perturbed but I had a great flight watching the season 1 finale of LOST (which is kind of terrifying to watch on a plane, especially with turbulence) and a few random other things before I landed. I also watched Mamma Mia! for about 20 minutes and I had to turn it off because it was too horrific to stand. I landed and went to baggage claim and met back with my best friend in the world, Lauren!!! For those of you who don't know her, she is truly a shining star and I'm so thankful for her. Anyways, we got into her bug (the car, not an actual insect) and I tried to fit three suitcases into the car, which was amusing for us but not so much for the angry taxis waiting to take our spot. Lauren then introduced me to this tiny restaurant that was soo good! It was this eclectic place called Masa and they served awesome deep dish pizza! We split one and talked for hours since it takes them 40 minutes to make each pizza.

Afterwards, we went back to Lauren's apartment and had very schizophrenic viewing habits as we watched parts of Legally Blonde: The Musical, Buffy (I forced her to watch the musical episode), Mommie Dearest, and 30 Rock. It was so much fun just to see her again and it felt like I never left.

The next day, I got to act as a tour guide through Trojan Vision for the opening of our new School of Cinematic Arts. The building is AMAZING since George Lucas donated 175 million dollars to our school to do this. I got to see Melissa while I was working and it was awesome to see her again. We chatted, ate some good food in the new courtyard, and watched the ribbon cutting ceremony. Unfortunately, neither George Lucas or Steven Spielberg were there. They could have at least shown up since the two new buildings are named after them :/ It was awesome to see this new school because it really refreshed my passion for these arts and just made me want to start learning as much as I can as soon as possible.

After the touring, Lo and I got dressed up and we used our free guest passes to the Arclight (BEST MOVIE THEATER EVER!!!) we got in October and saw Revolutionary Road. I really enjoyed the movie but I don't think I would want to see it again as it was really depressing and offered no light at the end of the tunnel. This couple was just destined to fail and crumble and it was painful to watch but it was brilliantly done. We then ate at my favorite restaurant in LA, Osteria Mozza. It's Mario Batali's restaurant and you have to call a month in advance to get in, but the food is amazing! We had ribollito (some thing with minestrone soup and bread crumbs), fresh mozzarella flown in from Basilicata the day before, and these amazing braised beef short ribs served over polenta....SO GOOD. Lauren and I then drove home and blasted the 13 soundtrack till we got back to her place. I passed out in a food coma and then went back to my apartment, which was difficult since my ID card isn't working so I can't get into my building if someone isn't there. Typical.

Today, Lauren and I woke up early and went to the Shrine (which is a block away) and went to the LA Sci-Fi and Comic Book Convention! It was super fun and there was so much stuff there! We found Kynt and Vyxsin from the Amazing Race there (I met them at a viewing party they losted in LA in December) and we helped them move their stuff into the center and talked a bunch with them about sign language, raw meat, Tokyo, and other things. I left there with some magnets of my favorite TV shows, Buffy and LOST shot glasses, Buffy playing cards, and a replica of the failsafe key that Desmond used to destroy the hatch in the second season of LOST!!! All in all, a great time.

This weekend felt jampacked with tons of stuff and I loved every moment, but the best part was spending it with Lauren. Honestly, she's the one person that I can count on and this weekend was such a huge testament to our friendship. I'm really happy right now and I can't wait to just hit the ground running this semester!

"And if your heart is always breaking
Cause the world is just not fair
When you’re at your worst
Your friend’s the first one there
Giving you something to lean on
And that’s what it means to be a friend" - 13: A New Musical

Season 3 Is About To Begin...

I'm currently sitting in my room as I am about to start the first part of what appears to be the third season of my life's TV show (don't ask, my freshman year was season 1 and this last semester was season 2) and I feel like I'm being presented with my first conflict (of which I'm sure there are many more to come). I'm watching the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer right now and I'm realizing how much the story of this episode pertains to where I am right now. I'm really identifying with Buffy. I'm "going through the motions" as I'm walking through life and really doing tons of amazing things, but not totally feeling the full extent of what I'm doing. That's not to say I'm taking my life for granted, I just wish that I could feel more alive. As Spike tells Buffy towards the end of the episode, living is the hardest thing to do and is the reason to have something to sing about. I really want to have something to sing about. I really hope I find it this season. I'm really thankful for what I have now, though, as I'm surrounded by amazing friends on both coasts. It was really tough saying goodbye to my friends tonight and I'm still a little emotional, just because depending on circumstances, I might not see them for almost a year if I find an internship or job in Los Angeles for the summer. I'm really torn but I'll just wait to see what opportunities present themselves before worrying about that.

I leave on a plane tomorrow (and I'm flying first class because I had enough points to upgrade!!!) and will be reunited with Lauren when she picks me up from the airport. Lauren and I have an awesome weekend ahead of us and I can't wait. It's going to be filled with Leo and Kate in Revolutionary Road, postponed Christmas present giving, Osteria Mozza, and the LA Sci Fi and Comic Convention with Kynt and Vyxsin from The Amazing Race 12!!! The Race Is On...

Sarabeths, Lady M, and Hedda, OH MY!!!

So, under the suggestion of Andy, I have now started a blog about my zany adventures in New York and Los Angeles. Given my addiction to television, I might equate my life to a TV show...deal with it. Anyways, I grew up on Long Island, thought I loved theater, then movies, then finally settled on television towards the end of high school when I started watching LOST and Six Feet Under because I figured out that I could have this power to tell much bigger stories. I now am a Cinema-Television Production major at USC and love it immensely. Starting this semester, I will be Personnel Manager for Trojan Vision, our school's television station. I have been working there intensely with CU@USC, a live talk show that films every weekday. I also interned with a film production company this semester, Odd Lot Entertainment, who just made the movie The Spirit. I'm working as hard as I can and, in the words of the Laverne and Shirley theme, trying to make my dreams come true. And I'm doing it my way :)

I'm going back to Los Angeles on Friday, but today I had what might be the best day in the city ever. I went in semi-early with Andy and we got in at 10:32 am. Our plan was to go to Sarabeths on the Upper West Side for breakfast as it is literally heaven on earth. If you ever want the best breakfast ever, go there!!! Anyways, we get to Penn and have to make it about 50 blocks uptown in 20 minutes...why you ask? WE HAD TO GET PORRIDGE!!! They only serve porridge until 11 so we Amazing Raced it through the pouring rain and got there just in time to split a bowl of Papa Bear porridge....soo good!!!

Afterwards, we went to Times Square and got student rush tickets for the matinee of The Fantasticks. Mission accomplished and we walked around until we got to go see that, which was awesome. The theater was really small and I entered with low expectations, but was really blown away by the talent. After the show, Andy nd I got to meet Nick from this season of The Amazing Race and he was super nice and signed our playbills. That was only the start to a very awesome day!!!

We then had the great idea of trying to go to the Met, but it closed early that day. I was a little bummed since I've never been and wanted to go, but we found an even better substitute. We went to this little "cake boutique" called Lady M and got these amazing capuccinos and quite possibly the best strawberry shortcake I've ever had. This was when Andy and I decided that if we lived together in the city, we would be broke.

We then did some shopping and just hung around, but 8 pm arrived and we got to see Hedda Gabler starring the brilliant Mary-Louise Parker. Weeds is one of my favorite shows and it was so inspiring to see her acting live on stage. We originally had third row seats way off to the left, but snuck over to the front row center to two empty seats right before the show started...SCORE!!!

The show was completely mesmerizing and really made me think about what I want to do with my life. I want to create moving works that are dynamic and will get responses even 100 years after they were created. Even as generations come and go, they all still have to live life and I want to depict that on screen. I want to leave my imprint on the world through television and do what I love for the rest of my life. After getting weirdly emotional and reflective about a somewhat psychotic desperate housewife, Andy and I bolted to the stage door and waited paitently to see...MARY-LOUISE PARKER!!! She is so nice in real life and I was very scared that she would be a celebrity that doesn't care about her fans but she really does! She asked not to take pictures because she had the flu, but she signed my playbill and I thanked her for her brilliant performance and told her how much I appreciated her work. She then held my arm, smiled at me, and genuinely smiled at me, and thanked me. WE HAD A MOMENT!!!!

All in all, this entire day was such a great day of reflection as I realized how much I love where I come from and my friends from back home while also seeing what I want to do in the future. I don't know how I'm going to get there, but we'll see how this life turns out. Hope it's just like what I see on TV.
